Restoration of coastal forests for local communities and coastal environment in small islands of Republic of Maldives

The Republic of Maldives consists of some 1190 small islands exposed to the threats of the sea level rise. With supports from Government offices of the Maldives, ISME has been implementing project in Maldives in the years of 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2003. In the year 2006, ISME is raising a nursery of some coastal tree species including mangroves to be planted along the coast. The objective of the Project is to restore the coastal forests destroyed by the recent 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami. Project activities are in progress in collaboration with the local communities.

The Project is funded by the Japan Fund for Global Environment.
