Gujarat Mangrove Plantation Project,
India

In July 2009, the Gujarat Mangrove Plantation Project was initiated by ISME. Natural Heritage Conservation Society (NHCS) in collaboration with Dr. A. Untawale (Chief Technical Advisor) will monitor and supervise the planting operations to be carried out by Daheda Sangh (a local NGO). The project is funded by Tokio Marine and Nichido Fire Insurance Co. Ltd. in Japan, and headed by Prof. S. Baba, the Executive Secretary of ISME.

The objective of the project is to establish mangrove plantations at Gujarat for coastal protection, enhancement of biodiversity (including habitats for endangered birds) and generation of income for the local community. The estuary of Sabarmati near Vadgam has been identified as the project site. The project aims to establish 80 ha of plantations a year starting 2009 for five years, subject to the decision of the funding agency.

NHCS and Daheda Sangh have met to discuss the plan of operation, methodology, species selection, nursery establishment, planting technique, availability of seeds, manpower, etc. Avicennia marina will be the main species planted. As mature seeds are available, seed collection has already started. Seedlings will be raised in the nursery before out-planting in the field.
