In Para State of the northern Brazil, constructions of roads caused hydrodynamic
changes in the coastal regions, and consequently, a large area of mangrove
forests were degraded in the last two decades. A three-year project
was started in 2005 in Braganca in Para State to restore the degraded mangrove
forests and develop education materials to enhance public awareness of
importance of mangroves. The project is supported and participated by the
local communities, and strongly supported by Federal University of Para
(UFPA)- Braganca Campus.
Project is funded by JICA, and is implemented by ISME in collaboration
with Federal University of Para (UFPA)- Braganca Campus, Museu Emilio Goeldi,
Mangrove Dynamics and Management (MADAM) and local municipalities. Duration
of Project is 34 months (June 2005-March 2008). Project Coordinator is
Mr. Takayuki Tsuji and supported by his wife, Ms. Aiko Tsuji
