The mangrove ecosystem is one of the most outstanding tropical ecosystems
for the direct and indirect benefits it produces and for its intrinsic
scientific interest. The mangrove forest plays the main role in creating
the ecosystem, in trapping sediments and dispersing the energy of storms,
tidal bores and winds. It also produces nutrients to the mangrove ecosystems
as well as integrated coastal ecosystems, provides space for land and aerial
fauna, convenient nursery area for shrimp, crabs and fish and advisable
place for nondestructive aquaculture. Recently the study revealed it contributes
to reduction of CO² emission if properly managed. Mangroves occupy the intertidal belt of tropical coastal plains and this unique type of environment requires special studies for rational sustainable development.
ISME aims to create a well-organized network of scientists, managers, planners and decision makers and all persons interested in all aspects of mangrove studies and management. ISME has been working at a quick pace because destruction of mangrove ecosystems is a worldwide phenomenon that has now reached alarming proportions. ISME concentrates on three lines of action: |
Aims of ISME are:
-To promote research and surveys with scientists and organisations for the conservation, rational management, and sustainable utilisation of mangrove and its ecosystems;
-To serve as an international data-bank on mangrove ecosystems;
-To enhance public awareness on the importance of mangrove ecosystems.
