Scientific name

Bruguiera gymnorrhiza

Above-ground roots are shaped like bent knees, so they are called "knee roots".

Tree height of B. gymnorrhiza in Okinawa is more or less 10 meters, but in the tropics it often exceeds 30 meters. Leaves have long elliptic shape. Length of propagule is about 20cm. Calyxes outside of petals are red, so this species is called "Akabana-hirugi" or "red-flower mangrove" in Japan.

It is distributed from Oceania to India. Beside Okinawa, Amami-Oshima of Kagoshima Prefecture is another habitat in Japan.

This species is good for firewood, charcoals, timber and paper materials.
