Lives in the holes dug in the mangrove mud. When you approach, they quickly hide underground. If you patiently wait without moving, they come out suddenly from here and there. Males have single big claws which are used when fighting or wooing*.
*Male of this species woos female by waving the single big claw. This gesture looks as if he is calling the tide to come, so in Japan it is called "Shio-maneki" or "tide-calling-crab".
